Indications

It is a combined oral hormonal contraceptive. It inhibits ovulation and causes changes in cervical secretion (produced by the cervix). It is used to prevent pregnancy. Other indications for Microgynon include: dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation); endometriosis (presence of endometrial tissue—tissue that lines the uterus—outside its usual location); ovulatory crises (severe ovulation pain or intermenstrual pain); adnexitis (inflammation of the fallopian tubes and ovaries); and ovarian rest (reduction or interruption of ovarian activity)

Contraindications

Do not use Microgynon if you are allergic to its active ingredients (levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol) or any other components of this medication (listed in section 6).

Do not take Microgynon if:

• You have (or have ever had) a blood clot in a blood vessel in your legs (deep vein thrombosis, DVT), lungs (pulmonary embolism, PE), or other organs.
• You have a known blood clotting disorder.
• You need surgery or will be spending a long period without standing up.
• You have ever had a heart attack or stroke.
• You have (or have ever had) angina (a condition that causes severe chest pain and may be an early sign of a heart attack) or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
• You have any of the following conditions that may increase your risk of arterial clot formation.
